O’Quinn, Mac Hill head back to Bristol

Mooresville, N.C. – Many in motorsports cherish the chance to race at the “World’s Fastest Half-Mile,” but Danny O’Quinn Jr. has another reason to be exciting about competing at Bristol Motor Speedway on Saturday: It’s home.

NASCAR’s most popular track is near O’Quinn’s hometown of Coeburn, Va., so it’s hard to think of a better place for the 2006 Busch Series Raybestos Rookie of the Year to begin his 2007 season.

“It’s going to be pretty neat to make my first start of the year at Bristol,” the Roush Fenway Racing driver said.

The Sharpie Mini 300 will also be the first Busch Series race of the year for Mac Hill Motorsports and the No. 56 KYMCO Chevy Monte Carlo SS. O’Quinn will drive a limited schedule for Mac Hill beginning with the race, and he said he’s eager to get back behind the wheel.

"I hated watching those first five Busch races on TV,” he said.

But don’t take his comment to mean he hasn’t been busy. O’Quinn has been working with the Mac Hill crew in preparation for Saturday, and that toil is paying off.

"We’re taking a very good race car to Bristol,” he said.

And that car will represent a leader in another segment of the motorsports industry: the manufacture of motor scooters, motorcycles and ATVs. The primary sponsor of the 56 this week is KYMCO USA.

Rick Pawelka, the company’s marketing & communications manager, said the Bristol race gives KYMCO a great chance to promote its products to tons of potential ATV-buyers.

“The partnership opportunity lets us expose the KYMCO brand to a large number of our demographic market during a very popular, high visibility motorsports event,” he said.

Team owner Jack McNelly said he and the entire Mac Hill organization appreciate KYMCO USA’s support, and he hopes that the partnership accomplishes both its racing and marketing goals.

“We want to give them a good run,” he said.

The Sharpie Mini 300 begins at 2:30 p.m. and will be televised by ABC.
